As a Naperville family photographer, I’m always on the lookout for places where kids can truly be their curious, giggly, messy, imaginative selves. Few places capture that spirit better than the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville. If you’ve never visited or you’re just starting to plan a day of hands-on fun with your little ones, let me introduce you to one of Naperville’s most beloved gems.
301 N. Washington St., Naperville, IL 60540
With over 30 years of inspiring Naperville families, the DuPage Children’s Museum was founded in 1987 by two childhood educators who believed deeply in the power of play. Over the years, the museum has grown from a temporary pop-up space to a permanent, thriving center of creativity right in downtown Naperville.
What I love most is that everything inside the museum is designed to nurture imagination, spark problem-solving, and build confidence. Their mission is rooted in supporting children as lifelong learners, and you feel that the moment you step through the doors.

The Naperville museum is packed with hands-on exhibits where children explore science, art, math, movement, and engineering without even realizing they’re learning. DCM has over 17,000 square feet of interactive exhibits that encourage children to build structures, manipulate water and wind, experiment with electricity, and create colorful masterpieces.
One of the highlights for many families is the AWEsome Energy area, which includes dedicated spaces for air, water, and electricity exploration. Little ones can dart through wind tunnels, splash at thoughtfully designed water tables, and tinker with kinetic and potential energy. It’s a dream for curious minds and, honestly, a photographer’s dream too! I’ve captured some of my favorite candid child portraits in spaces just like these. There’s also an art studio, a favorite spot for kids who love to get messy and expressive.

Beyond exhibits, DuPage Children’s Museum offers Learning Labs, workshops, Naperville birthday parties, and inclusive programming such as Adaptive Play Time, which supports families with children on the autism spectrum or with sensory needs.
They also host special events throughout the year, making each visit feel fresh and new. Members and non-members can enjoy these events where kids (and adults) can have a blast! They will love the interactive exhibits and explore their creativity.
DCM is a unique venue that can host cocktail receptions, board meetings, fundraisers, and other corporate events. Personally, I think it would be fun to have a meeting at a place full of adventure and entertainment! Who says work can’t be fun?!
As a Naperville family photographer, I always encourage parents to visit places that spark natural joy. The DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville is exactly that. Kids forget the camera is even there. They’re too busy learning, laughing, splashing, experimenting, and climbing. Those are the moments that turn into the most heartfelt family photos. So if you’re planning a weekend adventure, this museum is absolutely worth a visit.
Now that your little one is growing up, don’t forget to book your family’s next photography session. Time flies when your babies are little! As a Naperville family photographer, I love capturing those fleeting moments through photography. I will turn your family’s memories into priceless artwork to remind you of those times.
